Chris Astill-Smith takes a Boris bike on a journey for Dreams
Chris Astill-Smith takes Santander Cycle on unbelievable journey to raise awareness for Dreams Come True, this summer, I will be swimming the English Channel. I’ve committed myself to this huge challenge in order to raise money for Dreams Come True, a UK charity that aims to enrich the lives of children and young people with serious and life-limiting conditions.
To raise as much money as possible, I knew I needed to set myself a huge challenge, and also do something to capture people’s attention.
I’d seen people doing amazing things for charity, really amazing things, and they didn’t raise the kind of money which they deserved to because their cause didn’t get enough exposure and grab people’s attention. For the challenge, I’ve decided to swim the 35km from England to France; a feat that comparatively few people have achieved. To put this in to perspective, Mt Everest has been ascended about 7,000 times; the channel has only been swum around 2,000 times. I’ve now been training for over a year now and my support team feel he stands every chance of succeeding.
To capture people’s attention, I wanted to create a video which people would share, which in turn would get my challenge some exposure, and subsequently help me hit my target of raising £25,000 for Dreams Come True.
To do this, I checked out a Santander Cycle in London and took it on an amazing journey. My friend Alex, a videographer, accompanied me to produce a video which would surprise and entertain people.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have a lot of opportunities in my life so I wanted to do something for people who have been less fortunate. Dreams Come True was the perfect choice for me, it helps people who really need it, and unlike some bigger organisations, none of the money disappears in admin costs etc.
I’ve already received over £6,000 in donations and hope the video will help bring me closer to my overall target, what it for yourself here:
