The Arctic Trek
In February 2018 I will be taking on the crazy 100k Arctic Trek in aid of Dreams Come True. (A big deal given that I don't like the cold or camping!!) Described as a trek 'not for the faint hearted', it involves trekking 100k in just 3 days... in an average temperature of at least -20 degrees! Working alongside a local Aberdeen bar, the Gilcomston, we hope to raise as much money as possible for the charity.
I really want to challenge myself and push myself past my day to day limit. The first day will be spent acclimatizing to the temperature which could reach -40... it will take some getting used to!! On the second day the trek begins. The day will be spent trekking through snow, over frozen lakes and, hopefully not, but quite possibly, blizzards, until we reach camp where we will set up two person tents. This will be life for the next 3 days.
My training began in December 2015 and involves crazy early morning gym/weight sessions. I've also been taking part in a variety of challenges, such as the 26 mile Aberdeen Kilt walk, a 50k challenge and numerous running and walking events.
In 2017, I will be dragging Gwen (from the bar) to four 26 mile Kiltwalks, a moonwalk and numerous hill walking adventures. We don't know whether we are brave or just mad, but we're both excited to push ourselves past our limits, which will ensure I can physically and mentally cope in the Arctic.
Two weeks before the trek I will also take part in the dopey challenge, 5k, 10k, half and full marathon. Together with the Gilcomston, we hope to raise as much money as possible to make the dreams of local children and young people come true.
