Jacob is 17 and lives with cerebral palsy and autism and after having a tricky few years a dream trip to Florida has really lifted his spirits. Since returning back from his holiday all he has been talking about is the amazing time he had in America and his highlight was soaking up the sun and cruising around Miami in a Mustang convertible…living the dream.
Jacob has been fascinated with all things American since he was 10. He has a huge map of the USA on his bedroom wall and plots where he would like to go, he has had a difficult few years, but the holiday to Florida with his dad has given him a positive focus. Jacob has restricted mobility and his autism sometimes exclude him socially, but what really makes him happy is the thought of one day going to America. Jacob’s mum, Heidi said he becomes really animated when he talks about different US states, especially Florida because he loves alligators.
Growing up, Jacob has had a tricky time, he has had an operation to help straighten his legs and has undergone intensive physiotherapy. He was also upset when his parents separated and his mum was recently diagnosed with breast and liver cancer just before Christmas. Thankfully, the prognosis is good, but despite reassurances, it has understandably made Jacob anxious. So, when he heard that Dreams Come True were sending him and his dad, Stuart, to Florida, he was over the moon. They loved every minute and went to Disneyworld, Universal Studios, Sea World, Gator Land and even went cruising in a Mustang convertible in Miami.
“Jacob and I had an amazing time in Florida. We went on helicopter rides, a swamp Tour on an air boat looking at 'Gators' and other wildlife, car journeys to Miami, Daytona Beach, Clearwater & Tampa. We went to Sand Key Park in Clearwater and hired a beach wheelchair. It was amazing to go onto the beach and into the sea, something we usually find impossible to do in his standard chair; it was one of the highlights of the holiday for me going in the sea with Jacob. Before we went I asked Jacob if there was anywhere he wanted to go and he said to visit Miami! So we hired a Mustang Convertible and drove down. What an experience, Jacob loved 'cruising' down Ocean Drive with the roof down.
We can't thank Dreams Come True enough for giving my son the holiday of a lifetime, we were exhausted when we got home as we had done so much whilst we were there but I wouldn't hesitate for a moment going there again, tomorrow if possible!”
