Dreams awarded 200,000 pounds by The Kentown Wizard Foundation

We’re delighted to have been supported by The Kentown Wizard Foundation, a charity which focuses on children and young adults who are living with a serious illness or disability, with an incredible donation of £200,000!

The Foundation, set up in 2015 by philanthropist Ken Townsley from Blackpool, has donated the money to us to which will help us fulfil 80 personal dreams for children and young people.

Our CEO Peter Newman said “The grant will make such a huge difference to the lives of all the children and young people whose dreams it fulfils and to their families as well. It was lovely to spend time with Margaret and to learn more about the vision of the founder, Ken Townley, and the Trustees."

This substantial donation will help fulfil more dreams for children like Ruby, who was born with global developmental delay and has no concept of risk. Ruby's parents sai "Ruby would like to have sleepovers but the risks are too high as she can climb in and out of a normal cot bed. The travel pod would provide a safe and secure familiar environment which would allow us to go on family trips and holidays."

Ken Townsley started work at Blackpool Airport at the age of 15 as a Traffic Department Apprentice, doing everything from handling luggage to shipping cargo. In 1970 he opened his first travel shop in Church Street Blackpool, with just two members of staff. Within 40 years the Gold Medal Travel Group had become Britain’s largest privately owned tour operator and when Ken sold out to Thomas Cook it was widely reported that he walked away from the deal with £87m.

In 2015, Ken set up The Kentown Wizard Foundation, and he has since donated or pledged in the region of £100 million to the Foundation. That sum will generate substantial annual income in perpetuity and the Trustees intend to donate this income on an ongoing basis to other UK registered charities whose objectives and values are aligned with those of the Foundation.
