It all began one cold wintry November day in Aberdeen… Dreams Come True had placed an ad for volunteers to help out at the Aberdeen fun day, an outdoor event, in Aberdeen, in winter!!! Well it must have been pity as I applied.
Despite the weather we had great day, we had a lucky dip and balloons for the children, we also had Elsa and friends from Disneys Frozen who were posing for photos in return for a donation.
After the event I have a chat with Claire and Dawn about further volunteering opportunities, the rest as they say is history.
I am now very proud to be the volunteer team leader for Aberdeen, currently with 8 dedicated volunteers who selflessly donate their free time to helping the charity. It’s a great feeling knowing that I am working with people who have the same passion for the cause as I do. Together we meet once a month just to have a coffee and a chat which generally turns into a very enthusiastic ideas brainstorming session!
We are currently working on a few projects, we are bag-packing with Marks and Spencer until the end of March, there are 2 branches in Aberdeen and volunteers are always welcome to come along. The February bag-packs also have volunteers from the British Army running on a treadmill helping us raise funds and the profile of the charity. We have a band night featuring the Miserable Sinners at the Globe on Friday 19th February, entry is free and we will be hosting a raffle with some great prizes. Continuing the musical theme, we also have an acoustic night in preparation for March.
If you fancy helping to raise funds and get fitter, you can always join us for the Kilt walk? From Duthie park in Aberdeen to Potarch, the full route is 26 miles but there is also a shorter option from Banchory to Potarch, about 8 miles. The route follows the old Deeside railway where there are regular sponsored drinks stations and stopping points. It’s a great laugh with a lot of camaraderie among those taking part. Dreams Come True are the chosen charity for the 2016 Lloyds Register team.
We are also hoping to have a presence at the many Aberdeen and Shire summer fairs and events so if you see us there come and say hello, or if you want to get involved please email Claire.
